Engine Company No. 22

Although organized only since January, the members of Engine Company No. 22, whose headquarters are located at New and Colden streets, have demonstrated that they are well up in the art of saving life and property. The district covered by the company abounds in factories and tenements. The company was organized in January by Captain Lueddeke, and although the newest in the department, has already proved its worth in the district.

Captain Emil Lueddeke entered the department in 1895, and was assigned to the water tower. He was later made captain of the company, and in January organized his present company. During his service in the department Captain Lueddeke has had some narrow escapes from serious injury while fighting fires, but has always come off with flying colors.

Captain Lueddeke is ably assisted in the work at Engine Company No. 22 by Lieutenant Thomas Rock, who has seen service in the department for the past eight years. He was formerly connected with Engine Company No. 4, where he did good work. Lieutenant Rock had a narrow escape from being killed at the Solomon fire, when a falling wall all but buried him.

Engineer Patrick Mahon was admitted to the department in 1895. He was assigned to Engine Company No. 5, and later sent to Engine Company No. 16. He has been a member of the present company since its organization.

Captain Lueddeke last night said: “Engineer Mahon was an engineer before he joined the department, and it would be hard to find his superior in the department as an engineer. I think that he is the best engineer in the service. As a runner he is also in a class with the best of them.”

The pet of the company is “Laddie,” a Scotch collie, which is in full charge of the company’s headquarters when they are answering an alarm. “Laddie” sees to it that every member of the company is in his place when an alarm strikes, and if it happens to be at night he runs through the sleeping quarters, and if a member does not hear the alarm, “Laddie” gets him out of bed.

The apparatus of the company consists of an engine and a hose wagon. The engine horses are “Dick,” “Mike” and “Pat,” while the tender is looked after by “Frank” and “Harry.”

The members of the company are: Captain, Emil Lueddeke; lieutenant, Thomas Rock; engineer, Patrick Mahon; John H. Hager, Frank J. Kutcher, James P. Dowd, Harvey A. Shipman, John J. Burnett, Lawrence F. McMahon, George R. Thompson and Hughey L. Towey.
