Water Tower No. 1

Although only answering second alarms and special calls, the members of the
Water Tower are among the most active firemen in Newark. They have no special
district, but cover the whole city, being usually called out when a fire gets
beyond the control of the other companies. The headquarters of the company are
also a reserve stable and hospital for the horses of the department.
Captain James J. Dolan has seen service in the department for twelve years, and
was formerly connected with Truck Company No. 4. He was later transferred to his
present company, and has been there two years. He formerly acted in the capacity
of lieutenant under Captain Emil Lueddeke, and was promoted to his present
position recently. During his career in the department Captain Dolan has had
many narrow escapes from serious injury.
Lieutenant Andrew McNichol entered the service nine years ago, being formerly
connected with Engine Company No. 10. Like Captain Dolan, he has had many close
calls, but did not always come off as lucky. He was injured in two fires, and
twice laid up in the hospital. He has been with the Water Tower since January.
The headquarters of the company are at 56 Prospect street.
Captain Dolan said last night that Fireman Smith, of his company, probably holds
the record for miraculous escapes in the department. He has been injured as many
times as anyone in the service, and he no sooner recovers from one mishap than
he receives another.
“Sport” and “Boss” are the two pets of the company, and both are watch dogs.
The company is composed of Captain James J. Dolan, Lieutenant Andrew McNichol,
Walter Steinwald, George Smith, John M. Stivers, Philip Brady, John Schumacher,
Joseph Foehler and John Shanley. “Jim,” “Harry” and “Nigger” are the horses that
hustle the Water Tower to fires.
