1909 FIRE ALARM BOX LOCATIONS
 

The following is a listing of Newark, NJ fire alarm box locations for the year 1909. As box numbers ranged
from single to triple-digit numbers, the numbers here have been placed in a triple-digit format using zeroes
as place holders.

Unlike New York City, and other departments, Newark did not use zeroes in their box numbering system
due to the length of time it took to transmit the alarms to the firehouses. In the early 1900s, boxes were tran-
smitted much slower than today, and four rounds were sent in. So, if Box 690 were pulled, 100 blows on the
gong in each firehouse would be struck before the box finally ended. Looking at the below list, you will see
that a lot of box numbers ending in “9” weren’t even assigned.

A location highlighted in blue (P) indicates a “private box;” meaning one installed inside a building and
connected directly to the Fire Alarm Office, as opposed to one in the street.

A location highlighted in red indicates a box located at a fire department facility. Most, but not all, firehou-
ses had boxes in their quarters wired directly to the Fire Alarm Office.
