TWO-ALARM
FIRE HEAVILY DAMAGES
FORMER LYONS BREWERY
August 10, 1921

August 10, 1921 - 09:48 Hrs. - 2-Alarms - Box 354
97-103 South Canal Street at Lawrence Street
This fire involved the former Lyons Brewing Co., which
was now owned by the city and was being used
as a
warehouse for the City Market. An alarm was turned in
from Box 354, at Mulberry Street and Centre
Market, at
09:48 hours, followed quickly by a second alarm, at
09:52. The chief's returns were sounded at
14:05 hours.
The $13,000 fire loss would be equal to nearly $150,000
today, and was caused by the care-
less use of a torch.
The water tower is obviously quite busy, as is the
steamer at left edge. On close examination, the steam-
er
appears to be tractor-drawn, therefore probably being
Engine 2. At the time, they were equipped with
a White,
four-wheel tractor. They would've responded over River
Street (McCarter Highway) to South Ca-
nal Street (Raymond
Boulevard). There was a hydrant at Lawrence Street, just
where they're parked. No-
te the use of the straight,
truss wall ladders.
