MAY 6
A full assignment was transmitted on Box 4264, at 19:07 hours, for a reported
structure fire, at 218 Peshine Avenue, between Clinton Avenue and West Bigelow
Street. Engines 10-18-6-29, Trucks 5-10, Battalion 4, Deputy 1, and Rescue 1
responded. Engine 10 reported a smoke condition in the basement on arrival, and
then advised Battalion 4 they had a fire in the basement and were experiencing
entry problems. Deputy reported a fire in a 2-1/2-stry frame, occupied dwelling,
and transmitted a Signal 11. Battalion 6 responded as ISO, and Truck 4 as the
FAST team. Three lines were stretched, and an interior attack was made, quickly
knocking down the main body of fire. At 19:17 hours, Deputy reported all
searches were negative and the fire was under control. He also advised there was
a smoke inhalation victim in the care of EMS, but she refused treatment.
MAY 6
At 11:20 hours, a full assignment was dispatched on Box 3418, for a 911 call
reporting a fire in Dr. Horton School, at 291 North 7th Street, between Park and
4th Avenues. Engines 15-28-7-6, Trucks 7-11, Battalion 4, Deputy 1, and Rescue 1
responded. Truck 7 arrived and reported they had reports of smoke on the fourth
floor they were investigating. Engine 15 advised Truck 7 to go to the roof as
they were on the fourth floor and it smelled like tar burning on the roof. At
11:27, Engine 15 advised Dispatch they were investigating smoke on the third and
fourth floors, and four minutes later transmitted a Signal 308, holding Engine
15, Truck 7, Battalion 4, and Rescue 1, while they investigated further. In the
meantime, Battalion 4 arrived at the scene and proceeded to the third floor. At
11:37, Battalion 4 advised Deputy 1 he had heavy smoke in a third-floor girls
room and wanted all companies back to the scene. With reports from Engine 15 of
the smoke getting heavier, Deputy 1 revised the signal to a Signal 11, at 11:40,
bringing Battalion 6 and Truck 6 to the scene. In the next few minutes, Engine
15 located the seat of the fire, which was a garbage can burning in a stall in a
third-floor boys room. Once it was confirmed that the fire was confined and all
searches were negative, Deputy 1 placed the fire under control, at 11:47 hours.
MAY 6
Engine 19, Truck 10, and Battalion 4 turned out, at 08:59 hours, on a Signal 8
for Box 2563. It was reported that a company had struck a gas main, at 978
Frelinghuysen Avenue, between Carrington and Virginia Streets, and there was gas
leaking. Engine 19 arrived and requested Public Service Gas on a rush, reporting
they had a gas line ruptured and on fire. Battalion 4 advised Engine 19 not to
extinguish the fire and that he was en route. At 09:10, Engine 19 requested
Public Service Electric also due to am energized electric wire burning.
Battalion 4 arrived, and at 09:11, transmitted a Signal 308, and requested that
Public Service expedite their response as there might also be underground
electric cables involved. He also advised that they had one line stretched as a
safety precaution. At 09:22, Battalion 4 advised a Public Service crew had
arrived on the scene. At 09:31 hours, Battalion 4 advised the line that was
struck was found to be an electric line and not gas line, as first
suspected. Control of the incident was turned over to Public Service and all
fire department units took up.
MAY 5
Multiple calls for a house on fire, at 638 South 13th Street, between 16th and
18th Avenues, prompted Dispatch to transmit a full assignment for Box 4448, at
23:20 hours. The response was Engines 18-6-11-10, Trucks 11-5, Battalion 4,
Deputy 1, and Rescue 1. Truck 11 radioed smoke in the area while rolling
in, followed by Deputy 1 arriving at the scene, at 23:21, and reporting smoke
showing from the second floor of a three-story frame. He also transmitted a
Signal 11 and Signal 100, bringing Battalion 6, Truck 10, and the Arson Squad to
the scene. Deputy 1 corrected the address to 640 South 13th Street, an occupied,
three-story frame dwelling, with fire on the first and second floors. An
interior attack was made on the blaze using two lines on the first floor and two
on the second. At 23:41 hours, Deputy 1 advised that all searches were negative,
the main body of fire had been knocked down, and all companies were working
overhauling. The fire was declared under control at 23:48 hours.
MAY 5
At 13:16 hours, a full assignment was sent on Box 2414, for a fire reported in a
four-story complex, with a person trapped, at 124 Brunswick Street, between
Astor and Wright Streets. Turning out to answer to the alarm were Engines
10-14-6-19, Truck 5-10, Battalion 4, Deputy 1, and Rescue 1. Battalion 4 arrived
and reported a fire on the first floor of a three-story structure, and
transmitted a Signal 11 and a Signal 100, at 13:18. Truck 8 responded as the
FAST team, and Battalion 5 as the ISO. At 13:22 hours, Deputy 1 reported a fire
in the central unit of an occupied, eight-unit townhouse. He also advised an
interior attack was underway with two lines, which had knocked down the main
body of fire, and that all primary searches were negative. Deputy 1 declared the
fire under control at 13:25, and that all searches were negative.
MAY 4
Engines 29-10-6-19, Truck 10-5, Battalion 4, Deputy 1, and Rescue 1 were
dispatched on a full assignment, at 09:13 hours, on Box 4341, for a reported
balcony fire, at 85 Osborne Terrace, between Clinton Avenue and West Runyon
Street. Engine 10 arrived and reported a slight smoke condition, followed by
reporting a fire on the second floor. At 09:19 hours, Battalion 4 transmitted a
Signal 11 and reported they had a fire in the walls of a 2-1/2-story frame, two
lines had been stretched, and they were checking for extension. Truck 11 and
Battalion 1 responded on the Signal 11. At 09:21 hours, Battalion 4 declared the
fire under control. The fire was located in the front porch roof and exterior
wall. Deputy 1 used Engine 19 as the FAST team and ordered up Truck 11.
MAY 2
At 18:48 hours, a full assignment, consisting of Engines 11-7-6-18, Trucks 11-7,
Battalion 4, Deputy 1, and Rescue 1, was dispatched for Box 1438, to the
Restoration Center, 300 South 12th Street, between 12th and 13th Avenues, based
on a 911 call reporting a gas explosion in the basement, with two men injured.
Upon arrival, Engine 11 found an injured man in front of the building and called
for EMS, who already had units en route. Battalion 4 advised men were working on
a gas heater which blew out, but there was no fire. There was, however, gas
leaking, and all units were held until it was shut off in the basement. Once the
gas was shut down, a Signal 308 was transmitted holding Engine 11, Truck 11,
Battalion 4, and Rescue 1 at the scene. First arriving EMS units found two
residents and a security guard suffering from second-degree burns to their
heads, chests, and arms, and requested additional ALS units. Orlando Perez, 63,
Ronnie Shabazz, 55, and Raymond Daniels, 69, were stabilized at the scene and
then transported to the Saint Barnabas Burn Center, in Livingston, where they
were admitted. Public Service arrived at the scene and shut down the gas supply
to the boarding house until repairs could be effected. The Arson Squad was
called to the scene due to injuries occurring in the explosion. The explosion
was caused when one of the three men sparked his lighter to determine the source
of a gas leak.
