"This 'n' That..."

A little of anything & everything about Newark...

...but nothing in particular

N.F.D. REPORTER

In September, 1963, the first issue of the Newark Fire Department's own newsletter, the
NFD Reporter made its debut appearance. The Reporter was published by the NFD on
a quarterly basis, with Firefighters Mike Menafro, as Editor, and Mike Restivo, as Manag-
ing Editor. The paper was published through 1968, when it was cut due to financial con-
straints.

Each page of every issue I have will be posted here, and when finished, the postings
will be of the complete issues. Each posting will be presented in a larger than normal
format to make it easier to read.

NOTE: I have most of the issues that were published in my collection, but I don't have all.
If anyone out there has issues of the Reporter, or even a complete set, I'd be more than
happy to work out a deal for them so the entire set can be published here for all to enjoy.

1906 Newark Fire Department
Annual Report

Gary Knoller has been kind enough to allow me to share this piece of NFD history, from
his collection, with you all.

The report contains heaps of info on the department of the day, including fire company
locations, rosters of each company's personnel and apparatus, fire box locations, reports
from every division of the department, and lots more.

Unfortunately, the listing of alarms for the year will not be able to be shown here as they
are two pages wide and of very small print, and will not reproduce here well enough to be
read. However, the rest of the report will be posted here.

A tip o' the ol' NFH leather to Mr. Knolls for his kind generosity.

NEWARK  MULTIPLE-ALARM  FIRES
BY  BOX  LOCATION
1896  TO  1990

Many years ago, I put together a document showing Newark's multiple-alarm fires, from
1896 to 1990, by box location, meaning the intersection the box number was assigned to,
e.g. Box 4316 - 16th and Littleton Avenues.

As there may have been several different box numbers assigned to an intersection over
the years, I chose to list the fires by intersection, in alphabetical order, i.e. Abinger Place
and Brookdale Avenue. In the cases of named and numbered streets mixed, the named
street is first, e.g. Littleton & 16th Aves. Two numbered streets are listed by avenue first,
e.g. 18th Avenue and 11th Street.

The box numbers that have been assigned to that intersection are shown, followed by a
listing of multiple-alarm fires for which that box was transmitted. The dates are shown in
year/month/day format, followed by the time, in 24-hour format, number of alarms (or task
forces), and address(es) and/or type of occupancy. Fatal fires are highlighted in green.
